Indigo Blue (Harper Monogram)
Published in Paperback by Harper Mass Market Paperbacks (October, 1992)
Author: Catherine Anderson
Average review score:

I loved this book
"Indigo Blue" is a story about a young woman who, despite her bravery in the face of danger and rascism, has a severe inferiority complex. Jake Rand comes into her life at a time when she is dealing with a lot of problems. Her father has been severely injured in the mine that he owns and she, being the only child, takes over. Jake comes and immediately takes control, never telling her that he is in fact a wealthy businessman who made a fortune through mining. He is out to find out if his father is really causing accidents in small mines and then buying them from the bankrupt owners. He is immediately drawn to Indigo but his own preconceptions of women and their role in society cause him to treat her badly. She is forced into marriage with him and is terrified that he will treat her badly because he might percieve her as a "squaw". Indigo was betrayed by the first man that she loved and she does not know how to deal with Jake. He overwhelms her and confuses her and, as he begins to understand her fears and her personality, comes to love her very much. The description and the writing were lovely. Anderson made her characters come alive, painting their struggles and their growing love and understanding of each other in a way that lets the reader become a part of the story. "Indigo Blue" is a great romance novel and I would recommend it to anyone.

Invisible Links: Stories

Short Stories of the Swedish People
Selma Lagerlöf (1858-1940) is one of the most well-known literary figures to have come out of Sweden, particularly after she became the first woman to receive the prestigious Nobel Prize in Literature in 1909. As an avid supporter of causes such as women's rights and world peace, her thoughts and concerns are equally valid today.

Invisible Links is the first in a series of reprints of Selma Lagerlöf's works from Penfield Press. This collection of Lagerlöf's earlier short stories depicts the Swedish people, their lives and struggles, through glimpses into their souls. This updated edition is an abridged version of Pauline Bancroft Flach's 1899 translation, except "The Epitaph," that was included in the Swedish collection and translated by Jessie Brochner.

Selma Lagerlöf's storytelling includes elements of folk legends, fairy tales, and dreams. There are avenging ghosts and ghosts with good advice; there are tragic and happy endings. Her wise, compassionate voice narrates tales that are both dramatic and perplexing.

There are lighter stories. "Uncle Reuben" is a comic fable about the use of family legends to keep children in line. "Downie" is a love story set in springtime. And "Among the Climbing Roses" is about the insect friends to be found in the summer garden. Lively and intimate observations of the natural world are woven through all the stories, lending them an authentic beauty.

Lagerlöf explores the boundaries between illusion and reality, good and evil, the forces of life and destruction. Her stories do not come up with easy answers. What is certain is that the meanings human beings create, the links-or fetters-connecting them with the world, are nothing less than sacred. In Lagerlöf's fiction, this conviction becomes the lifeblood of the storyteller and reader alike.

It's Not All in Your Head: Now Women Can Discover the Real Causes of Their Most Commonly Misdiagnosed Health Problems
Published in Paperback by Harper SanFrancisco (May, 1997)
Authors: Henrietta Leonard and Susan Anderson Swedo
Average review score:

A Life-Saving Book Every Woman Should Read
It's NOT All In Your Head is most definetely one of the most helpful books I've ever read. So often, women's symptoms get played down. They will go to the doctor and their illnesses will be misdiagnosed, passed off as something that's all "in their head", or just plain ignored. It seems this book was written to combat that very thing. The authors of this book really get to the heart of diseases that are often misdiagnosed, aiding women in discovering the identity of what ails them. I strongly recommend this book to any woman, it truly can save a life.
